THE CREW

Captain & Boatowner:
Jostein Eimhjellen
(Born 1974)
Svelgen, Norway

Jostein is a self-employed carpenter and owns two apartment blocks and one house which he rents out in is hometown Svelgen.
Dreaming about traveling the world in a boat with white sails and foreign cultures ahead he finally decided to buy S/Y Naomi the autumn of 1998.
After a year sailing at the west-coast of Norway, with a drunken crew, he felt well prepared for a longer trip with anybody who wanted to join him.
Two friends, Frode and Allan joined up and the summer of 1999 they sailed away from Norway. Destination: Gran Canaria.
Eventually they got there and concluded that it had been a suitable trip for testing out the boat and its equipment.
Jostein was glad that his crew had some sort of will to cooperate as a team.

BEEN CREWING ON S/Y NAOMI

CHIEF ENGINEER:
Frode Ytrehus
(Born 1974)

Svelgen, Norway.

Sailed with us:
Norway - Portugal, 1999.
Gran Canaria - Fiji, 2000.

Frode has his knowlegde and education in mechanical engineering and chemical processing.
When he is not crewing S/Y Naomi he is working at Elkem ASA Bremanger, producing siliconmetal for a major part of all computers and electronic devices in the world.
Obviously he was the natural choice for the position as chief engineer onboard.
When sailing to Portugal he proved his knowlegde in technical matters and problem-solving.
Well... that is, we did not use our sails, we used the engine...and he had to fix it!
Responsible for all technical equipment onboard he ended up in an argue with the captain when the toilet would not flush and was  full of ****.
Is a toilet technical equipment?
Is it the chief engineer's job to fix it?
Well... finally they agreed that dirty jobs must be
divided among all crew.

GALLERY BOY:
Øyvind Myklebust
(Born 1974)
Svelgen, Norway.

Sailed with us:
Gran Canaria - Fiji, 2000.

Øyvind is educated as electrician, and use to crush silicon-metal at the same factory as Frode. Now he works  in his father's construction firm where he have multiple tasks.
His versatility made him a natural choice for cooking our food :-)
The captain and the rest of his crew was so happy with his services that he upgraded him to a higher position onboard:

Chief Engineer - Electrical Installations

Øyvind is what we call a really nice guy.
He stay calm in all situations and do all efforts  with a big smile.
He were the only one of  us who had been to the caribean before us. But that was done by cheating (On a Aeroplane).

NAVIGATOR:
Allan R. Dyrstad
(Born 1974)
Svelgen, Norway.

Sailed with us:
Norway - Portugal, 1999.
Gran Canaria - Panama, 2000-2001.

Allan is educated economy... something, but later on he converted to Information Technology. He spent 6 years in the Navy, as an officer cadet and later a personell officer, supply officer and intendant. Fed up with the life in the Navy, Allan went ashore and worked a year and a half at Statoil`s personell account- department located at Sandsli near Bergen(Norway).

On the trip, Allan had the responsibilities for navigation and liaison. This was partly because of his experience and partly because the skipper likes to delegate tasks which he can self controll his enthusiasm for. Allan also brought his guitar with him.

His computerskills made him perfect for writing and mailing home our travelingletters.

Anne Marie Dyrstad
Svelgen, Norway.

Sailed with us:
Trinidad  - Isla de Margarita, 2001.

Allan`s mother was sporty and came all the way over the Atlantic ocean to visit us. She flew to Trinidad and brought with her some norwegian goodies like brown cheese, Stabburet`s liverpaste and macarell-in-tomato.
She also had norwegian tobaco with her, and before we knew it, the norwegian sailclan was all over the place for the purpose of rolling a cigarette.
She joined her son (Allan) on a sailtrip to Los Testigos, where we all lived the happy life together with two other norwegian sailboats Vestørn and Vestbris.

Kellfrid Lyslo
Haugesund, Norway.

Sailed with us:
Isla de Margarita - Panama, 2001.

Kellfrid had been studying geology for some time at a norwegian university , but now she was ready to see the world.
Kellfrid was at first crew on S/Y Vestbris, but after it was docked for the winter time on Isla de Margarita
, she sailed with us to the east. Kellfrid solved the great mystery of
"The never-rising dry-yeast". This led fresh bread and cakes and became a nice add-in for the ship food. After a discharge in Panama, she went to Caracas, Venezuela to backpack with her boyfriend from Norway.

Tine Grødal
Oslo, Norway.

Crew from S/Y Naomi's Cruise around Fiji.
The German film producer Georg from Hamburg, Germany.

Sailed with us a week. Unfortunately, the wind didn`t blow very much, and the german, who had payed us a few bucks for the trip was nearly crying when we had to use the engine to proceed.

In one of the innumerable resorts on Fiji we met five norwegian students who usually study in Australia. It was nice to get some norwegian company, and we took them on a Naomi Cruise. Here we are on Musket Cove, where we rented small catamarans.

From Left: Benedicte K Lund from Tønsberg, Jostein, Erlend Riiser from Oslo, Nina Hoel from Oslo, June Garberg Mevold From Gossen ( Aukra), Frida Sundsrud from Ørje in Østfold and Øyvind.

With two norwegian medical students aboard, we felt very safe.

They sailed with us from Beachcomber – Musketcove – Mana island – Monuriki (the island where the film "Cast Away" was filmed) and back to Beachcomber and further on to Denerau Marina Nadi, where they signed off.

From the left: Harald Martin, Olav and Kristoffer.
We met these three guys on Mana Island, and they were very interested in sailing with us to the island where "Cast Away" with Tom Hanks was filmed (Monuriki).
